Gut health has become a phrase that is talked about all the time – in podcasts, on social media and in books filling the shelves. It seems everyone is onto it. We thought we’d offer some explanation for anyone that isn’t entirely sure what it’s all about….
What’s The Science?
The gut is home to millions of bacteria, both good and bad. When the balance between them is disrupted, it can lead to various health issues such as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, and even mental health problems. A healthy gut can boost the immune system, improve digestion, and ensure proper absorption of nutrients from food.
What Do I Need To Do?
To maintain good gut health, it is important to consume a balanced diet rich in fibre, probiotics, and prebiotics. Fermented foods, seasonal vegetables and plenty of beans and lentils are a great place to start. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management can also contribute to a healthy gut.
Recent studies have found that the gut is, as Nancy Mure called it (above), “the ringmaster”. When we don’t look after our gut, the effects manifest in so many other parts of our body.
