May is Skin Awareness Month, a time to focus on the health and well-being of our largest organ.
Unapologetically passionate about the health of our skin, we couldn’t let the opportunity to talk about Skin Awareness Month pass us by.
From acne to eczema to skin cancer, there are many conditions that can affect the health of our skin. That’s why it’s important to take steps to protect and care for our skin every day.
Particularly as we approach the summer months, our number one piece of advice is sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!
As Mary Schmich said in her very famous piece, which went on to become a chart-topping hit by Baz Lurhman, “Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.”
One of the most important things we can do for our skin is to protect it from the sun. UV radiation from the sun is a leading cause of skin cancer, and it can also cause premature ageing and other skin damage. To protect your skin, wear protective clothing, seek shade, and use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Eating for your skin is more important than people realise. When we eat a diet that is full of processed, starchy carbohydrates and sugar, it can have a detrimental effect on our skin.
The best foods we can choose for good skin health are:
🍓 Fruits
🥕 Vegetables
🐟 OiIy fish
And remember:
💧 Drink at least 2 litres of water every day.
🚫 Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol.
Finally, it’s important to pay attention to any changes in your skin. If you notice a new mole, a change in the appearance of an existing mole, or any other unusual spots or growths on your skin, see a GP or dermatologist right away. Early detection is key in the treatment of skin cancer and other skin conditions.
