Blepharoplasty in Leeds
Upper and lower-eyelid surgery
Consultant-led assessment and surgery for suitable upper and lower-eyelid concerns. Every treatment plan is designed around the individual, with careful attention to natural facial proportions, safety and recovery.
What can this service help with?
Blepharoplasty may be considered when excess skin, prominent fat or changes around the eyelids create heaviness, hooding, puffiness or a persistently tired appearance.
Our consultant-led service provides assessment and treatment planning for:
- Heavy or hooded upper eyelids
- Excess or loose upper-eyelid skin
- Under-eye bags and prominent lower-eyelid fat
- Selected areas of loose lower-eyelid skin
- Upper eyelids that feel heavy or affect the upper visual field
- Concerns affecting both the upper and lower eyelids
- Eyelid changes that make the eyes appear tired or less defined
- Patients seeking a careful, natural-looking eyelid rejuvenation
Surgery is recommended only where it is clinically appropriate and the expected benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Consultant-Led Care
Your assessment and surgery will be led by Mr Tarek Eltantawy, Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon.
Â
Individual surgical planning
The recommended approach is based on your eyelid anatomy, eye health, medical history and the result you would like to achieve.
Â
Personalised Aftercare
You will receive preparation guidance, written aftercare information and an appropriate follow-up plan.
Not every eyelid concern requires blepharoplasty
Symptoms around the eyes can sometimes be related to brow descent, eyelid drooping, dry-eye problems, thyroid eye disease or another eye condition rather than excess eyelid skin alone.
Your consultation allows the surgeon to assess the eyelids, review your medical and eye-health history and advise whether blepharoplasty, another procedure or further specialist assessment would be more appropriate.
Please tell the surgeon about any history of dry or watery eyes, glaucoma, thyroid eye disease, previous eye surgery, contact-lens problems or changes in your vision.

Blepharoplasty treatment options
Upper blepharoplasty
Upper blepharoplasty addresses excess or hooded upper-eyelid skin. Where appropriate, prominent fat or a small amount of underlying tissue may also be adjusted.
The incision is usually positioned within the natural upper-eyelid crease to help the resulting scar become less noticeable as it matures.
Lower blepharoplasty
Lower blepharoplasty may be considered for under-eye bags, prominent fat and selected areas of loose lower-eyelid skin.
Depending on the concern, the incision may be positioned just beneath the lower eyelashes or inside the eyelid.
Combined blepharoplasty
Combined surgery may be considered when concerns affect both the upper and lower eyelids.
Suitability, anaesthetic requirements, expected recovery and the complete cost will be discussed following assessment.
Is blepharoplasty right for you?
Before recommending surgery, Mr Eltantawy will assess your eyelids, general health, eye health, medicines and expectations. The objective is to determine whether surgery can be performed safely and whether it is likely to provide an appropriate result.
Reasons people consider eyelid surgery
Patients commonly request an assessment because of:
- Â
- Heavy or hooded upper eyelids
- Excess upper-eyelid skin
- Under-eye bags or puffiness
- Loose lower-eyelid skin
- A clear, clinical desire for a clean and professional removal
- A tired or less-defined appearance around the eyes
- Upper-eyelid heaviness affecting everyday comfort
- Concerns affecting both the upper and lower eyelids
- A desire for subtle and natural-looking rejuvenation
When another route may be needed
Further investigation, treatment or specialist eye assessment may be recommended where there is:
- Â
- Significant dry-eye disease
- Active eye infection or inflammation
- Unexplained changes in vision
- Eyelid drooping caused by muscle weakness or ptosis
- Brow descent that may require a different procedure
- Thyroid eye disease, glaucoma or another eye condition
- A medical condition that increases surgical or anaesthetic risk
- Smoking or another factor that could compromise wound healing
- Expectations that surgery cannot safely or realistically achieve
The safest and most suitable recommendation will always take priority.

Aftercare
Receive written aftercare information and planned follow-up so that healing, eyelid position and scar maturation can be reviewed.
Your Procedure & Recovery
The exact surgical technique depends on whether treatment involves the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
For upper blepharoplasty, an incision is normally positioned within the natural eyelid crease. Carefully measured excess skin is removed and underlying fat or tissue may be adjusted where appropriate.
For lower blepharoplasty, the incision may be positioned below the eyelashes or inside the lower eyelid. This allows prominent fat, loose skin or both to be treated according to the surgical plan.
Blepharoplasty may be performed using local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic. The appropriate option will be explained during consultation.
Scar placement and recovery
Incisions are positioned carefully within or close to natural eyelid creases where possible. Fine sutures are normally used for external incisions.
Bruising, swelling, tightness, watering, dryness and temporary blurred vision can occur during the early recovery period. Bruising and swelling commonly remain visible for approximately two to three weeks.
You may be advised to use cold compresses, keep your head elevated and use lubricating drops or ointment. Contact lenses and strenuous exercise should be avoided until the surgeon confirms that they can be resumed.
Scars usually continue to soften and fade over several months, although no surgical scar can be guaranteed to become invisible.
Important risks
Potential risks include bleeding, infection, dry or watery eyes, asymmetry, noticeable scarring, temporary blurred vision, difficulty closing the eyes, changes in lower-eyelid position, under-correction, over-correction and the possible need for revision surgery.
A bleed behind the eye that threatens vision is very rare but requires urgent treatment. The risks relevant to your proposed operation will be discussed in detail during consultation and before consent.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during my blepharoplasty consultation?
Mr Eltantawy will discuss your concerns, medical history, medicines, previous surgery and eye health. He will assess the upper and lower eyelids and explain whether surgery or another approach may be suitable.
What is the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty generally addresses heavy or hooded upper-eyelid skin. Lower blepharoplasty may address under-eye bags, prominent fat and selected areas of loose lower-eyelid skin.
Do I need a consultation before surgery?
Yes. All patients require a consultation before surgery. Your consultation fee is £100.
Can consultation and surgery happen on the same day?
No. Blepharoplasty should be planned following a full assessment. If surgery is suitable, it will be arranged as a separate appointment.
Do I need a consultation before removal?
Yes. A consultation is needed to assess the concern, discuss your history and decide whether routine minor surgery is appropriate. A procedure is not confirmed until the clinician has assessed you.
Can consultation and surgery happen on the same day?
No. Blepharoplasty should be planned following a full assessment. If surgery is suitable, it will be arranged as a separate appointment.
Â
What type of anaesthetic is used?
Blepharoplasty may be performed using local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic. The recommended option depends on the procedure and your individual circumstances.
Will I have a scar?
Every surgical incision produces a scar. Upper-eyelid incisions are usually placed within the natural crease. Lower-eyelid incisions may be placed beneath the eyelashes or inside the eyelid. External scars normally fade over time but cannot be guaranteed to become invisible.
How long will recovery take?
Bruising and swelling commonly remain visible for approximately two to three weeks. The result and scars continue to settle over several months. Individual recovery varies.
When can I wear contact lenses and eye make-up?
You should avoid contact lenses and eye make-up until the surgeon confirms they can be used safely. You will receive individual aftercare instructions.
Can upper and lower-eyelid surgery be performed together?
Combined surgery may be possible for suitable patients. This depends on your anatomy, eye health, medical history and the surgeon’s assessment.
Can blepharoplasty improve my vision?
Removing heavy upper-eyelid skin may help selected patients whose upper visual field is obstructed. This must be assessed individually and additional eye testing may be recommended.
How long do the results last?
The improvement can be long-lasting, but surgery does not stop the natural ageing process. The skin and tissues around the eyes will continue to change over time.
Â
How much does blepharoplasty cost?
The initial consultant assessment is £100. The surgery fee is confirmed following consultation because it depends on whether upper, lower or combined surgery is recommended and which anaesthetic and operating arrangements are required.
