“Today is your day to start fresh, to eat right, to train hard, to live healthy, to be proud.”
– Bonnie Pfiester
Yes, I love routine!
And the beginning of a new school term is a great opportunity to reinstate routine in both aspects of life – motherhood and business.
As a mum of four (including a newborn and a toddler) and the co-owner of a busy GP and skin clinic, I can confidently say that routine is my secret weapon.
Balancing family life and running a business isn’t easy, but a solid routine helps keep everything—and everyone—running smoothly. Today, I’d like to share why establishing routines and good sleep habits is essential for both personal and professional success.
The Importance of Routine
A well-structured routine provides a framework that supports our daily activities, helping to reduce stress and increase productivity. Here are some key benefits:
Predictability and Security: For children, especially, routines create a sense of security. They know what to expect and when which can reduce anxiety and improve their overall behaviour.
Efficiency and Productivity: For busy parents and professionals, a routine ensures that all essential tasks are completed promptly. It minimises the time spent deciding what to do next and helps to stay focused.
Better Time Management: By allocating specific times for work, family, and self-care, we can ensure that no aspect of our lives is neglected. This balance is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being.
Healthy Habits: Consistent routines can reinforce healthy habits, whether it’s eating nutritious meals, exercising regularly, or creating healthy sleep habits like keeping our phones out of our bedrooms each night. Over time, these habits become second nature.

The Role of Good Sleep Habits
Good sleep is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. As a health and wellness professional (and a busy mum and business owner!), I cannot stress enough how important sleep is for both physical and mental health. For you and your entire family, no matter what age.
Here’s why:
Restoration and Healing: During sleep, our bodies repair cells, process information, and strengthen the immune system. It’s a time for physical and mental restoration.
Improved Cognitive Function: Adequate sleep enhances memory, decision-making, and creativity. It’s essential for staying sharp and focused throughout the day.
Emotional Well-being: Lack of sleep can lead to irritability, mood swings, and even depression. Good sleep habits promote emotional stability and resilience.
Physical Health: Poor sleep is linked to numerous health issues, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Ensuring sufficient rest is vital for long-term health.
We often treat patients here in the clinic and can find that purely by establishing healthy routines and habits, their mental and physical health can drastically improve.
Embracing routine and prioritising good sleep habits have had a significant impact on my life, both as a mum and as a business owner. I am currently focused on finding a balance that works for the business, my family and my own well-being too.
By creating a structured environment, I can better manage my responsibilities and enjoy precious moments with my family. I encourage you to assess your daily routines and sleep patterns. Your mind, body, and loved ones will thank you!
Let me know if you have any routine hacks to share!
