Hi I am Kay Ali, founder of the The Leeds Skin Clinic
So how did I get from working behind a busy desk of legal files to operating a laser and skin clinic?
After struggling with years of having acne, and the NHS not really able to help me after prescribing multiple doses of roaccutane and no advice on how to clear the scarring left behind and skin clinics just trying to sell me courses of treatments that didn’t seem to help but make it worse, I went on my own solo journey to discover what I needed to help clear my skin.
My years of research paid off when I met my husband who wanted to open his own private GP practice and I decided to open The Leeds Skin Clinic!
I designed the upstairs space in a way that people did not feel judged, with dark ceilings, soft lighting and striking wallpaper to make those who came into the space feel comfortable. With clinical spaces usually being known as having white walls and bright white lights which highlight every single blemish in a not so nice way, this environment was created to do the opposite.
I selectively picked the best partners in the industry to source their machines and products including Soprano titanium, Harmony XL Pro, Hydrafacial, Obagi, Meseosthetic and more.
My Own Journey At The Clinic !
I am also a patient of my own clinic and after having treatments as and when I could, I realised something I was avoiding and did not want to do. Whilst my scarring looked like it was improving, I was still experiencing hormonal break outs and my skin often looked oily.
Being a mum of 4, managing the private GP clinic and running the skin clinic, I was rushed off of my feet and didn’t make time to make nutritional meals and neglected my gut health. I realised no matter how many treatments I had, if I did not take action and improve my gut health, the acne will keep persisting.
During my years of research and my time living alone in Toronto, I had gone sugar and gluten free to help clear my gut. Â However, I realised I am also no longer the single, footloose and fancy-free girl who could spend time sourcing the most organic and pure ingredients and lovingly spending the time to cook my food and plan lunches ahead. I needed to find a solution to fit my new world.Â
Advanced Nutrition ProgrammeÂ
This is when I discovered the Advanced Nutrition Programme (ANP).
This is an award-winning premium range of innovative supplements with ground breaking research demonstrating the benefits that vitamins and nutrients can have to feed the skin within.
With their ethos being ‘better skin from the inside out’ they have trialled and tested foods which we consider to be packed with nutrients to not be as good for you as you would think. This is due to growing/storage conditions and even the way we cook the food.
The ANP supplements are one of five pharmaceutical grade-only products in the UK, so you may think you are taking your off the supermarket shelf supplements religiously but do you really know what is in them and how they are absorbed by your body.Â
I now take a Skin Clear Biome to layer my gut with lactobacillus and bifidobacterium (healthy bacteria) and then take the Skin Accumax to reduce sebum production, reduce redness and encourages the liver to process correctly and detoxify.
The Skin Accumax has an equivalent of 3 medium apples, 40 spears of asparagus and 28g of chicken liver- this is all packed in one pill. Whilst I actively try to reduce my sugar intake and have switched to lactose free milk, I do have a cheeky indulge time to time but after taking the ANP supplements, my breakouts have reduced drastically and I know my gut is finally getting the support it needs to help clear my skin inside out.
Treatment ConsistencyÂ
So, I also mentioned having treatments as and when I could. Again, I am guilty!
Being busy isn’t an excuse but I would only have a treatment here and there and sometimes they would be quite invasive so had to deal with downtime and then take a huge break and so on.
How can I help patients when I’m not following a consistent plan to treat and maintain my own skin? This is when I realised a skin membership is the only way for consistency. You cannot expect to have a microneedling session once every 6 months and expect clear flawless skin. When you hear skin is a journey- I can definitely tell you it is and, on the journey, consistency is key.
One of our patients, Julie demonstrated this brilliantly. Julie came to us asking us to help her deal with deep wrinkles, some scarring and overall, a youthful complexion. She wanted to achieve this without the use of injectables so laser was the way. Ipixel was the best treatment for her concerns and she religiously attended every 6 weeks for a year. After one day seeing Julie in reception after 8 months, my mouth fell open, her skin looked amazing! Her lines had been reduced, her skin looked brighter and overall she looked younger.
This is because she stuck to the treatments and was consistent. Creating the membership programme, we allow you to choose treatment options suitable for your skin type on a monthly basis, by being on the membership programme, you book your once-a-month skin appointment. This is a great way to check in with your skin once a month, stay true to your skin journey and also a time for you to switch off.
This is why I believe The Leeds Skin Clinic is the place for you to choose to start your skin journey. Everything created at The Leeds Skin Clinic is coming from a real-life person who is also on the journey to clear beautiful skin. I am not perfect looking and strive to be the best version of myself and I hope I can take you all on the journey with me.
